Show transcript0:00You think nothing exciting would happen, you think it would just go like this, but what we'll see is much more interesting.0:07All right, let's drop it.0:09What we've got here are water droplets,0:13which look pretty ordinary at normal speed, but at 2,000 frames per second.0:24Maybe mathematician John Bush can explain to us just how a drop can bounce.0:32Whoa, whoa, whoa. That is so cool. And that's just going to float all the way over to here.0:37Oh!0:40Okay, so you're saying that that happens all the time?0:43That's right, every time a water drop coalesces into water, so every time it rains, a raindrop hits a puddle.0:49Rains, that's raindrops in a puddle.0:50Yeah, so that's billions of times a day.1:04Why does the droplet sit without just connecting?1:07So there's an air layer in between the two, and it's basically weighed, it'll coalesce as soon as the drop makes contact with the bath, but it takes a finite amount of time for the air layer to drain.1:17Or for non PhDs, there's a thin layer of air separating the drop from the water.1:23But as the air is pushed aside, most of the droplet connects with the water below.1:29But this happens so fast, the connection is actually pinched off, and a smaller droplet is formed.1:36But why do some of the drops leap up into the air?1:40When it coalesces, waves are generated at the point of contact, and they sweep upwards, they apply a force which lifts the drop off the surface.1:46And then once again, it's surface tension. It has enough force1:48That's right.1:49that it pulls itself back off1:50That's exactly right.1:50a tenth of the size.1:53This surface tension is the quality of a liquid that causes the surface layer of that liquid to behave like an elastic sheet.2:03It's the effect that allows insects to walk on water2:07and water drops to hold together.2:11Wow, that's crazy.2:12It's gone crazy.2:13That's amazing.2:19This cycle happens again and again until the droplet is small enough to be completely absorbed.2:28Try to get.2:29Sure.
