A satirical news segment mocks Star Trek fans for disliking the latest film’s action, young cast, and accessible story, then jokes about a special DVD cut.
Show transcript0:06 Turning to entertainment, Star Trek fans are decrying the latest film in the long-running series as a fun and watchable action-packed thrill ride. 0:14 Yes, it was exciting, but where was the heavy-handed message about tolerance? 0:18 Where was the stiff acting? I mean, it just didn't seem like a Star Trek movie to me. 0:22 I'm just really, really disappointed that this storyline made sense. 0:26 If I wanted to see young, attractive people, uh, doing cool, exciting things, I, I, you know, I'd go watch sports. 0:32 And with us now to discuss the backlash is entertainment reporter Bree Lindsay. 0:35 Hi, Glenn. 0:36 Bree, is this Star Trek as riveting as the fans are complaining it is? 0:39 Uh, Glenn, early reviews are calling it a delightful action adventure movie and a surefire hit. 0:44 No wonder the fans feel betrayed here. 0:45 Apparently, there isn't even one scene set at a long table in which interstellar diplomacy is debated in endless detail. 0:50 Really? I understand fans were angry that the Klingons dialogue was subtitled 0:54 They are. 0:54 because it allows the Klingons to be understood by people who haven't studied 0:57 Right. 0:58 the imaginary language for years. 0:59 Yes, but most fans were more upset by the look of the movie. 1:01 Mm-hmm. 1:01 Heart-stopping chases, state-of-the-art CGI, 1:04 Really? 1:04 and alien battle scenes that don't just look like 2 out-of-shape guys in bad makeup fighting awkwardly. 1:08 That's a real slap in the face for Trek fans. 1:10 Right, yes, but I think the bigger issue is that fans felt like Star Trek belonged to them, and now the studio has turned it into something people will actually like. 1:17 Oh. What about the casting of up and coming young actor Chris Pine as James T. 1:21 Kirk instead of the aging, bloated William Shatner? 1:23 Well, of course, that announcement was a huge disappointment for fans and Shatner alike. 1:27 A lot of the fans have been saying that this movie sullies the vision of someone called Gene Roddenberry. 1:31 Right, yes. Gene Roddenberry was the hack who created the Star Trek television show way back in the 40s or something. 1:36 So is Paramount doing anything to combat all this negative press? 1:39 Yes, they are. They've announced the DVD release will feature a special cut just for the Trek fans 1:44 Mm-hmm. 1:44 with 3 hours of extra footage in which characters stand around debating the merits 1:48 Okay. 1:48 of saving the Andorian ambassador from the surface of Silex 4, 1:51 Sure. 1:51 until you just wish everyone was dead. 1:53 Well, that should be some consolation. Thanks, Brie. 1:55 Thanks, Glenn. 1:56 Earlier today, Paramount released this statement to ease fans' concerns. 2:00 We stand behind this film and firmly believe that in a few years it will seem just as dated and cornball as previous Star Trek films. 2:07 Moving on now, an elderly black woman is still following President Obama around and shedding a single tear whenever he does anything.
