Show transcript0:02He's not easy to find. Cross a one-lane bridge on a dirt road south of Asheboro that leads you past acres of tall corn, and there you'll find Rufus Hussey.0:14Are you the fellow with the slingshot?0:18The feller. I'm the one.0:20The one.0:21The one. I'm the bean shooter man.0:24The bean shooter.0:24Rufus Hussey is known far and wide as the bean shooter man. Translated, that simply means he is awesome with a slingshot.0:36At a particular place, you want me to hit the last one?0:38Hit it right on the Pepsi, how about that?0:40Let's hit the blue.0:42The blue, all right.0:45No, I'm not a show off. I'll just give you the facts, and if that ain't sufficient, we'll go to something else.0:53Well, the facts are that Rufus Hussey's been deadly accurate with a bean shooter since he was 10 years old, but it was no childhood game then.1:02It was a matter of survival.1:05A lot of times when you, uh, had that, you ended up something to eat where you didn't have it if you didn't have it along with you.1:12Rufus was part of a poor farm family of 13. He used a slingshot because only his oldest brother was allowed to use the shotgun to hunt rabbit.1:21Well, the rabbit is the easiest thing there are to kill. See the, see the stick there?1:28That way to hit him in the head, you wouldn't, wouldn't bother his body.1:31You just nicked it, didn't you?1:33That's right, hit him in the head, but now I'll show you how to hit the whole rabbit.1:37A whole rabbit or a whole walnut? Rufus can get either one. You got him.1:44At the age of 65, Rufus's eyesight is also good enough to use these rocks to pick off a quarter in midair.1:54There it goes.1:55Yeah, you hit it.2:01Is the evidence there?2:02The evidence is here. You got it.2:05That's souvenir.2:06Uh, the evidence is a chip just left of the L in Liberty. Rufus says he can't really explain how he does it, especially since he doesn't aim the slingshot.2:15You want to see your target, first thing.2:17Right.2:18It don't make no difference where you have this hand, but the one up front what control it.2:23The one up front controls?2:25Right.2:27See the jig?2:30Yes, sir.2:33Rufus makes all his own slingshots, mostly using dogwood.2:37I tell them this is my office work right here.2:39Rufus finds wood in the natural shape of a slingshot. He doesn't carve them.2:43Then a few twists of the wrist, and he's got a new bean shooter.2:47This one is number 4,156. He started selling them back when rubber became more widely available after World War II.2:56So after found out you get this gum rubber, I decided I'd revive the art in '52, so I started making them and demonstrating and showing people what they do.3:07And what Rufus can do with a slingshot is astounding. He often cuts weeds from his cornfield.3:14So you want to go to the right?3:15Yeah, fall to the right.3:16Okay.3:20It did. And the sound of Rufus Hussey's footsteps means sure death for insects.3:26See the Japanese beetle on the leaf?3:28Yes, sir.3:29Watch me get him.3:31He didn't hurt the leaf. Watch him do it again.3:36Oh. Rufus Hussey doesn't have a TV or a telephone. He just likes country quiet with his slingshot.3:43His mailbox advertises his skill, but modestly, he won't come right out and say he's the best.3:49Well, I've not been challenged lately. I don't know where you- what you would call it.3:53We'll let you decide that.
