Show transcript0:01Well, a feisty Modesto store clerk fights back against a would-be robber and provides police some hard evidence to arrest him, a picture from his camera phone.0:09It may have helped that the manager was also trained in martial arts.0:13News 10's Cornel Bernard shows us how he fought back.0:17When 24-year-old Corey Allen Funk walked into this Modesto quick stop hoping to rob it, he never expected a manager like Edward Petrosi.0:26I didn't want to hurt him, but he made me.0:29It was late, the suspect waited for all the customers to leave, then snuck up on Edward from behind.0:34As soon as I approach here, I see, my God, he's coming right behind me.0:37Suddenly I had to turn and say, what are you, what did, what are you doing?0:41Suddenly he, I saw the knife, rigid knife, long like that. He goes, open the drawer, give me your money.0:48Whoa.0:48What the suspect didn't know was that Edward has a black belt in six martial arts.0:53On surveillance video, Edward goes into fighting stance, ready for action.0:57I said, no, this is serious. I had to jump backwards and stand my, you know, get ready position, grab something.1:06I said, hey, you want my money? Come on, get it. Right there, I chased him.1:10He just was shot.1:12The surprise suspect runs for the door, but the manager is right behind, and with a few high kicks sends the robber tumbling right into the parking lot.1:21That's the best place to jump to the air. I just did the three run and hit it right behind his back, and he went all the way to the ground.1:31The young suspect almost loses his pants in the scuffle and flees to his car, but that's not the end of the story.1:37At that moment, Edward remembers his cell phone camera.1:40I said, my God, let me take a picture from this man. I took my cell phone, thanks to technology.1:46I zoomed in gently, nice, got it.1:49He sure did. A clear shot of the suspect's license plate number, which later led to his arrest.1:55I think that's fantastic.1:58I, I commend him. I'm glad he could defend himself.2:00Customers are praising Petrosi, who immigrated to Modesto from Iran.2:04Edward says he hopes future customers will show him respect, unlike Corey Funk.2:09I was nice, polite. I was ready to serve him, do my best, but I didn't expect him to treat me like it was kind of betrayal here, you know?2:19God, no, don't do that to me. I have enough experience to handle you, you know, and I had to use it.2:29Love that guy. This robbery happened a few weeks ago. The suspect, Corey Funk, was arrested in Fresno, charged with a string of robberies using the same knife.2:38Edward doesn't consider himself a hero, just someone who knows how to protect himself and a store, and apparently did a pretty good job of that.2:45He had some skills there. He had some karate skills.
