Conan O'Brien joins NBC security for a night, checks monitors, tests his oversized key ring, and awkwardly questions and frisks people around Rockefeller Center.
Show transcript0:00 All right. There's, uh, you know, something else I want to talk about here, just mention briefly. 0:06 Uh, folks, as as you're probably all aware, we live in security-conscious times here in America, and I just want to take a second and applaud the security force here at NBC. 0:14 They do an amazing job. You probably met some of them when you were coming in. 0:16 Really great. They do a good job. 0:20 Crack security team here. Crack security team, and I pass these people every day. 0:25 I see the security guys, men and the women that are protecting us here in the building, and I see them, and they're doing such a good job, and I started to think the other day, wouldn't it be interesting if I could see what it takes to be a top flight security guard here at 30 Rockefeller 0:40 Center, you know? I wanted to know if I had the right stuff, if I could do it. 0:45 So, folks, guess what I did? I joined up for a night. That's right, I gave up my cushy late night job, and I joined in on the security force here at Rockefeller Center. 0:55 I brought a camera crew with me, and, uh, this is what happened. 0:59 Take a look. 1:11 I'm here at the main station for NBC, uh, security, and I'm here with Oliver Gordon, one of our top security people. 1:16 How are you, sir? 1:17 I'm fine, good, thank you. 1:18 Uh, let me ask you, tonight, for one night only, I'm joining the force. 1:22 Is it known as the force? 1:23 No, it's known as security. 1:24 Can we say that I'm part of an elite squad? 1:27 Well, that's a little stretching. 1:28 The Q ring and the inner ring, the Q ring. 1:30 All that stuff, that's good, that's good. 1:32 Uh, that's okay? 1:32 That's okay. 1:33 One of the greatest things about, uh, security guards is they get to carry around that, that ring of keys that sort of open anything. 1:38 Do you have one of those? 1:39 Oh yeah, we got our keys. 1:40 What do you got? 1:42 Yeah, but not many. 1:42 Let me see that. Hold that up. Jingle that. 1:44 We got about 10 on here, that's all. 1:46 Yeah? Check this out. This opens every door in New York City. 1:51 You got the master. 1:51 And Staten Island. I also use this at Christmas time. 2:00 May officer down? Officer down. So, how would you say my first day is going so far? 2:06 Uh, a little tricky. 2:08 This is where, if there's going to be trouble, it's going to start here, and it's going to end here, is that right? 2:12 That's right. 2:13 Someone shows their ID, and then it shows up on this monitor. 2:16 Do you check the face that shows up here with the face of the guy coming through? 2:20 That's right. 2:21 If that face doesn't match up, what do you do? 2:22 I stop them. 2:23 You stop them. How do you stop them? 2:25 Tell them to stop. 2:26 No. Elbow to the throat, soft part of the throat right here. 2:30 Drive the tip of the elbow until you feel the back of the throat. 2:33 That means you've crushed their windpipe. You got it? 2:46 What's that? You hear a noise? 2:48 Yeah. 2:49 Yeah. 2:50 Check it out. 2:57 Hello, how are you? Everything all right? 3:08 But she ran away. 3:09 Yeah. 3:10 Doesn't seem suspicious to you? Have you seen her before? 3:12 She's been here about 5 years now. 3:14 Not a long time when you think about it. 3:16 Not long at all. 3:18 Sometimes people put in 5 years just to make everybody comfortable, and then cha cha. 3:33 This is the nerve center for, uh, NBC security right here. Can you tell me who is this guy right here? 3:40 Uh, that's, uh, Officer Brown. 3:42 Officer Brown, Officer Brown, do you hear me? 3:45 Yes, we hear you. 3:46 This is Conan O'Brien speaking to you from Late Night with Conan O'Brien, starring me, Conan O'Brien. 3:51 How are you? 3:51 Everything is good, everything is clear. 3:53 Could you give me a wave right now so I can confirm it's you? 4:00 Do me a favor, just pat this guy on the head who's walking through right now. 4:03 Give him a little pat on the head. Nice! That was nice, that was very good. 4:09 All right, I'm proceeding to other levels. If there's any problems at all, my code word tonight is I'm known as the Red Fox or Night Fox. 4:17 All right, Red Fox, talk it loud and clear. 4:19 I prefer Night Fox, to be honest. 4:34 Hello! 4:38 Hold this. 4:44 That really hurt, and I accomplished nothing. Can you unlock this woman's room? 4:49 You have the key. 4:50 Yeah, bet you do. You dog. Look at you laughing, you're like, oh, I got the key. 4:56 Yeah. 4:57 Well, look, it's really worn, like you've used it a lot. 5:01 You see, like, uh, Conan merchandise, but when's the last time you saw some Dateline merchandise? 5:06 I don't think anything. I don't think I can remember any. 5:09 Right. You know what I'm saying? High five me. I've never done that before. 5:15 It was weird. Your hand is moist. Let's take a look in the bag, just to make sure that that's, is that 5:37 the Dateline offices right here. 5:39 Okay. 5:40 There's, uh, Stone Phillips right there. Have you met Stone? 5:42 Yes, I have. I work with him. 5:43 Nice guy, right? 5:44 He is good. He's a good guy. 5:46 Kind of robotic. 5:49 Have you ever actually seen him take nourishment? 5:51 No. 5:52 Really? Because there's this theory that he's powered by 5:56 dry cell batteries. 5:57 Not that I know. 5:59 He might be a robot. You've never seen him drink water or t- or eat food? 6:03 I've seen him drink water, yes. 6:04 Did he put the water near his mouth and then say, what's that over there, Oliver? 6:08 And you looked away, and when you turned back, the glass was empty, but there was a puddle on the floor? 6:13 Robots do that.
